What is voice AI?

Voice AI is the broader category of technology that lets software understand and produce human speech. It's the combination of pieces, speech recognition, language understanding, and speech generation, that makes something like an AI voice agent possible.

The pieces that make up voice AI

Voice AI generally combines speech to text, which turns spoken audio into words a computer can process, a language model, which figures out what to say in response, and text to speech, which turns that response back into natural sounding audio. Together, these let a piece of software carry a spoken conversation.

Where you already encounter voice AI

Voice assistants on phones, transcription tools, and automated phone systems all rely on some form of voice AI. What's changed recently is that the language understanding piece has gotten far better, moving from rigid keyword matching to genuinely understanding open ended speech.

Why it matters for business calling

Better voice AI is what makes an AI voice agent that can actually hold a real conversation possible, rather than the older, frustrating experience of talking to a robotic phone menu that only understands a narrow set of commands.

Frequently asked

Voice AI is the underlying technology category. An AI voice agent is a specific application of it, built to carry out a phone conversation for a particular purpose, like sales or support.
