What is an AI phone agent?

An AI phone agent is a piece of software that makes or answers real phone calls and carries the conversation itself, using AI to understand what's being said and decide how to respond, without a person picking up the phone.

Outbound versus inbound

An outbound AI phone agent places calls to a list of people, such as new leads or customers due for a follow up. An inbound AI phone agent instead answers calls coming into a business, handling routine requests or routing the caller appropriately. The underlying technology is similar, the difference is who starts the call.

What happens during the call

The agent listens to what the caller says, converts that speech into text, decides on a response using a language model trained or instructed for that specific conversation, and converts its reply back into natural sounding speech, all within a fraction of a second per exchange.

Why businesses use one

The main draw is consistency and speed at volume. A phone agent doesn't get tired, doesn't skip calls when busy, and can place or answer far more calls in a day than a small team realistically could on their own.

Frequently asked

Yes, that's the main difference from older automated phone systems. It can respond to unexpected questions and adjust the conversation instead of breaking when someone goes off script.
